Who We Are
The Arc of Southington, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1954. As an active local chapter of The Arc, our mission and focus is to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
The group began with parents sharing their information and experiences raising their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and we wanted to be there to support them. Originally known as The Southington Association for Retarded Children, it was later renamed The Southington Association for Retarded Citizens. In 1993 the name was changed to The Arc of Southington to remove the word “retarded” in keeping with the name changes of both The Arc of CT and The Arc of the United States.
What began as a support group and volunteer organization has evolved into a human service agency providing advocacy, education, information, and an array of quality and individualized support to people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Our vision is for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to receive inclusive education, appropriate quality support, inclusion in all aspects of community life, and empowerment to live the lives they choose.
